Subdivisions County (or equivalent)

Meriad is divided into 21 administrative regions. These administrative regions form the first-level subdivisions of Meriad, and are further divided into 381 counties. Administrative divisions are governed by a royally-appointed governor, in addition to a popularly elected council. Representation in the Parliament of Meriad, the Hall of Jarls, is determined by voting within each administrative region. In addition to this important role, the administrative regions also serve as military and economic divisions of the country.

Government Structure[edit | edit source]

The primary role of each administrative region is to serve as an electoral district for seats in the Parliament of Meriad. In addition to this, Meriadni administrative regions are also expected the maintain public services, such as welfare programs and public roadways, and collect taxes for both the national government and local government.

The government of each administrative region is divided into two parts: the Governor, who is appointed by the king, and the Administrative Council, the members of which are elected popularly by the constituents of each region. The majority of each region's power is exercised by the Administrative Council, and the position of Governor is mainly ceremonial.

  • Administrative Capital: The City of Duvnafjördur

Duvnafjördur Administrative Region is the smallest of the 21 administrative regions in size, but has by far the highest population density. The City of Duvnafjördur, the largest city in the country, takes up a significant portion of the administrative region. The city, which has an estimated population of 1.813 million, accounts for roughly one sixth of the country's population, and serves as Meriad's largest economic center.

Geographically, the Duvnafjördur Administrative Region is very contiguous, mainly as a result of its small size. The majority of the population is within the city limits of Duvnafjördur, which is situated on the west side of the region, and the fjord-facing areas of the region are extremely lightly populated by comparison. Despite its population, the region has the single smallest number of National Guard personnel employed. This is primarily due to very restrictive enlistment standards and the lack of space for expansive military establishments. The taxes in the Duvnafjördur region are also well below the national average, contributing heavily to this fact by limiting the available funds for equipment procurement and maintenance.

Eyjanfjalla[edit | edit source]

  • Administrative Capital: Eyjanfjalla

Eyjanfjalla is the least contiguous administrative region in the country, as it is entirely composed of a group of islands off of the north-west coast of the country. Eyjanfjalla is home to the oldest continually inhabited settlement in the country, the town of Francifjord, Meriad.

Less than fifteen thousand people live in the region, and the majority of the land area is reserved as a national park. The administrative capital of Lindefjord is the home of an estimated 10,382 people, over two thirds of the region's total population.

Olstadt[edit | edit source]
