Template:Infobox official post The Lord Regent of the Crown is a royally-appointed government post on the Royal Cabinet of Meriad. It's use is reserved for when the reigning monarch is incapacitated or absent. This post is left empty by tradition, but a Regent Elect is appointed by the monarch in the eventuality that the position is required.

The current Regent Elect is Lady Sydney Payne.

The Regent Elect attends meetings of the Meriadni Royal Cabinet along with the monarch and participates in debate, but does not have a parliamentary vote regarding the proceedings. Upon the monarch being declared 'conspicuously absent,' [1] the Lord Regent assumes all of the roles of the monarch within the cabinet. It is important to note than the monarch still exercises state roles even when the Lord Regent assumes power in the Royal Cabinet. The Lord Regent of the Crown also has a significant international importance, and traditionally attends events of state in a similar fashion to the monarch and Prime Minister.

If the monarch is a minor and a regent holds the ceremonial role of reigning monarch, then the Lord Regent of the Crown is referred to as the Lord Caretaker of the Crown, or Caretaker Elect.

  1. In this case "Conspicuously Absent" refers to the monarch being involved in extremely time-consuming matters when render him or her unable to attend cabinet meetings for an extended period of time.
